Picture of the Day

A woman reaches around Ashok Alexander to get to Bill Gates. To the right of him Laura Turkington of the Vodafone India Foundation is seen, and behind him is Gary Dramstadt, also of the Gates Foundation. ADS/CKS.

Bill Gates has been in India looking in on his foundation’s public health initiatives in Bihar and exploring possibilities in UP. Last night he was at an event at the Oberoi commemorating ten years of the battle against HIV in India, principally through the organization Avahan, originally run by Ashok Alexander, who is also the out-going country head of the Gates Foundation in India.

Predictably, Bill Gates was more or less mobbed by the crowd, which comprised public health practitioners, biotechnologists, and members of government as well as many outreach workers including those from the Avahan program, all of whom wanted to reach out to him and many wanted to get a photo with him. He took all the jostling like a pro, wearing a teflon jacket and a smile as he made his way through the thronging hall.

A pretty transgendered person wanted to get a photograph with me, so I said sure. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a copy.
