How to Learn the Skills you never Knew you Needed

Last week, we held a workshop at the campus of the Adianta School, which turned out to be one of our most successful interactions with students and young professionals to date. The workshop, delivered by Dr. Aditya Dev Sood, was titled, Skills You Need for Your Future Career, and covered a range of important skills and things to consider as one enters the professional world. Many of these aren’t necessarily obvious, but are becoming increasingly more important in today’s digital, connected, knowledge-based world. The workshop aimed to help students:

• understand what skills employers are really looking for
• understand what is India’s innovation future and how to prepare for it
• learn how to develop innovation skills and understand innovation processes
• understand how social media can play a role in professional success
• learn how to plan and prepare for higher education the right way


Dr. Sood talked about several skills that he has written about in his recent ebook, 9 Skills That Will Get You Placed, describing in greater detail just how you can build these skills and how they will help prepare you for the job of your dreams. Many of these skills involve competencies that are relatively new – such as maintaining a blog, creating a strong LinkedIn profile or building up a follower-ship on Twitter. They aren’t skills that traditional education institutions pay much attention to, but in fact these are often the first avenue through which you can catch a potential employer’s notice. Colleges and universities simply haven’t kept up with the kinds of changes that the internet and social networking have made possible, and that has been their biggest failing. Students, therefore, must develop these skills on their own, to get that extra edge over their peers (unless, of course, they’re fortunate to be a part of those few rare institutions that do privilege these skills).

Besides covering these skills, the workshop also provided a brief introduction to innovation in India. It covered the current scenario, the different kinds of discourse around innovation in India, and the need for us to build these competencies to a much greater degree in the coming future. Organizations all of the country – private as well as public, Indian as well as multinational – recognize this, and are creating more and more opportunities for innovation-centric careers. For students looking for interesting, creative and challenging careers, the time has never been this ripe.

Participants at the workshop, who included final-year MBA and Engineering students as well as young working professionals, were engaged interacted enthusiastically. There were some heated discussions about how one can overcome the status quo and the strict social structures of India in order to pursue a career in innovation. Several participants were very intrigued about how exactly one could learn these innovation skills, and were curious about the Adianta School’s offerings. Several had never been to a workshop quite like this, and talked about how it was very unique, and “a very interactive approach in terms of giving graduating students a different perspective on the skills needed in the market.”

Another participant, currently working in a production house in Delhi, said: “Dr. Aditya dev Sood has a very clear and vision thought and is very impressive. He gives the thought and the plan to help you believe in your self. He also explains these concepts very nicely, and the workshop was a real energy booster.” Another student, currently pursuing her MBA said, “This workshop was very useful and it should be conducted further as well. Aditya has great knowledge and it will be an impact on students stereotyped minds.”
